Anticipation Outscores Arrival
Neuroscientists studying reward have found that the anticipation of something good and the thing itself run through much of the same circuitry. The dopamine response – the chemical signal that feels like excitement, possibility, aliveness – is at its most active not when you get the reward but when you are expecting it and not yet certain. And the recommendation engine on the other end of your screen has been trained, on an enormous amount of human behaviour, to recognise exactly what that state looks like.
Booking Is Not the Goal
What it serves you next is not designed to get you to book. Booking ends the game. What it serves you next is designed to keep you in the not-yet-booked window, because that is where you are most engaged, most likely to click, most susceptible to one more beautiful picture of a terrace overlooking the sea. The algorithm is not reading your mind. It is reading your rhythm: the way you hover, how long you linger on a price before moving on, whether you open the same destination twice. It finds the frequency of your anticipation and matches it.
This is why a casual Tuesday-night browse can swallow two hours. You were not scrolling mindlessly. You were being kept in the most pleasurable neurological state your brain knows how to produce, and each new tab is another small hit of possibility. None of them need to resolve.
The Engineers Already Know
The remarkable thing is that the engineers building these systems did not necessarily sit down and think: right, let us exploit the neuroscience of anticipatory dopamine. They just optimised for engagement, for time on site, for clicks. The human brain handed them the answer by behaving exactly as it always does.
Which means the best marketing tool anyone has ever built is essentially a very sophisticated way of keeping you in January, on the sofa, with twelve tabs open, going nowhere and feeling brilliant about it.
